Home Care after Surgery:
     -Rest when tired

-Drink more water.  Try for half your body weight in ounces daily. (150 lb = 75 oz)

-Walk at a conversation pace, for 5-10 minutes, multiple times throughout the day

-Eat healthy, healing foods (fruits, veggies, lean proteins)- avoid alcohol and salty/ fatty foods

-Avoid lifting, pulling, and pushing (including shopping carts, vacuums, and mops)

-Avoid aggressive massage.  Rule of thumb: if it hurts- it's not helping, stop immediately.  Aggressive manipulation of tissue around the surgery site will cause more swelling, causing  thicker, lumpier scars.

-Wear your compression garments as directed

Manual Lymphatic Drainage:
Lymphatic drainage massage is recommended twice a week for 2-4 weeks, beginning 10 days after surgery.

This will provide the best results with the fewest possible treatments.

However, you can start treatments earlier, with more frequent intervals, if a more rapid recovery is needed (for example, if you will be traveling or returning to work shortly after surgery).

Be Patient
Relax and settle in to this phase of your procedure.  Give your body time and the right tools (as listed above) to heal.  It will give you a better surgical outcome.

  • Helps prevent infections
MLD reduces inflammation and can slow the progression of inflammatory autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus. and ankylosing spondylitis:

How MLD Works
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
gently stimulates the lymphatic system
to work more efficiently.
This rapidly reduces the swelling
that develops following surgery
and cancer treatment.
With the swelling resolved,
your body's immune system
functions better,
allowing the oxygen and nutrition
that is necessary for healing
better access
to the affected tissues,
resulting in a faster recovery.

This is video from annualreviews.org of an MLD session being done under flouroscopy guidance.  You can see the lymph fluid (white) moving through the lymphatic vessels of the subject's ankle as MLD is performed.
